In Progress

The single author behind the many writers in the Bible.

The many authors of the text are guided and superintended by the one eternal and living God through the Holy Spirit. God is the over-arching author of his word, though he used many different men to speak and write the words. This is the meaning of what the Apostle Peter writes in his second letter: “No prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:21). We can confidently open our Bible to any text, and say, “Hear the word of the Lord,” and after we have read it, say, “Thus says the Lord.” The choice of words and expressions may come from the mind and mouth of Moses, David, Matthew, or Paul, or any of the other thirty-six composers of the text but the message is what God wanted said and written. It is God’s word clothed in or conveyed by means of man’s personality and vocabulary.
