The only basis for deciding right or wrong is the holiness and perfection of God. According to God’s will, some things that people want and support are sinful and evil. This means that some things popular, fun, and pleasing to us may be evil because they go against what the nature and will of God. Right and wrong is not determined by majority vote. We are not God. Our hearts are deceptive and we can rationalize and justify ourselves to do anything. The prophet Jeremiah cautioned us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9). God’s prophet Isaiah warned us,

“Woe to those who call evil good
    and good evil,
who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and shrewd in their own sight!” (Isa. 5:20-21)

What we think and want may not be right or good for us. Twice the book of Proverbs names the danger of following our own desires: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (14:12; 16:25).
