Jesus said that evil comes out of our desires and thinking: “There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him” (Mark 7:15). In the parallel passage in Matthew, Jesus named these things: “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.” (15:19-20a).

Evil is our rejection of God and his will for our lives. No accountable person is without sin (Rom. 3:9-18). If we wish to be right with God, we must be willing to confess, “God, be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13-14). For us as sinners, the first step toward God is recognizing him as a just, holy and loving God and repenting or turning away from our sins (Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30-31).

Look into your own heart now. What do you see there? What do you need to repent of? Are you willing to do that? Have you done it?
