We are the highest and crowning act of creation and the only creature that God made in his image (Genesis 1:26-27). This, of course, does not refer to a physical image because God is a Spirit (John 4:23-24). It means that we have mind, memory, consciousness, intelligence, talk, moral choice, accountability and responsibility that no other creature has. For example, a dog does not know it’s a dog. It does not have a moral conscience or that there is a God or worship Him.

We are unique in all God’s creation. God speaks to us and holds us responsible for choosing to obey or disobey him. Though animals have feelings, an animal has no choice, no accountability to God and only acts out of instinct. God placed us over the rest of his creation. When God created us, He made us responsible caretakers of his creation. At the creation, he said:

“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Genesis 1:26).

This means that we should take good care of the earth and its resources of rivers, oceans, water, air, fish, birds and animals. We are the only creature responsible for the care, use and protection of all the other creatures.
