Walk with the Doc – Chapter 5
Walking is an excellent means of developing and maintaining one’s sense of balance. The major elements of the balance mechanism, the eyes, inner ear, and sensory receptors in the muscles and joints, are kept well-honed by walking. Living a sedentary lifestyle, particularly during the later years when there has been age-related loss of lean mass will be setting you up for a fall, which can be debilitating, and even life threatening. A well-established walking program combined with some resistance training for upper body will substantially reduce the risk of falling.
