Walk with the Doc – Chapter 1
One way to ensure long term adherence to a walking program is to keep it interesting and challenging. That can be achieved by taking an occasional walk in the “wilderness” by choosing to walk on a primitive path that is unfamiliar to you and not well traveled. When confronted with the unknown, no doubt there will be some stress and an accompanied enhancement of the senses. The word “stress” generally has a bad connotation, but not in this instance. Some short-lived stress can be very beneficial. It pushes you to a level of optimal alertness and enhances both behavioral and cognitive performance. You feel more alive. Avoid clinging to the mundane. Experience the challenges that arise from periodically stepping outside of your comfort zone and tackling the road less traveled. It can strengthen the body and sharpen the mind.
