Jesus, the “one Lord,” produces the “one faith” which leads to the “one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). This baptism is into the saving effects of the “death and resurrection” of Jesus (Romans 6:3-4). At that time, God gives us “remission of sins” and “the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).  As disciples of Jesus in the body of Christ, the church, we obey the command of Jesus to “Do this in remembrance of me” (I Corinthians 11:23-25). The communion memorializes Jesus and celebrates the covenant he inaugurated in his blood shed for the forgiveness of our sins (Matthew 26:28). In the communion we “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (11:26). Baptism is a one-time entrance into fellowship with Jesus and his church. The communion is the church’s weekly celebration of that union with Christ.
