How would you define God’s church?

In the Bible, the church takes its meaning, purpose and life from Jesus. The church is what it is because of who Jesus is. When I choose to follow Jesus and become a Christian, Jesus adds me to His church (Acts 2:38-47). I am born-again into a spiritual family. The word for church in the Bible, “ekklesia”, refers to the assembly of those called out of the world to follow Jesus (Matthew 16:18). Sometimes the word is used to denote one of the many local congregations of the churches of Christ (Romans 16:16). Occasionally, the word church is used to refer to the universal body of all Christians on earth (Ephesians 1:22).

“Assembly” draws our attention to the fact that we are a part of a family of believers. When the church comes together (1 Corinthians 11:18), we are an assembly of Christians. In assembly, we can physically see what Christ has made us, an assembly of saved people united by Christ’s Spirit. Our need to belong and have meaningful, safe relationships can be fulfilled!

The church is described by more than one hundred images or names. The terms give different perspectives on the origin, nature, mission, work, love, fellowship and destiny of the church. Here are some of these descriptions or images: the body of Christ, the bride of Christ, the family of God in Christ, the kingdom of Christ, the vineyard of Christ, the field of Christ, the army of Christ, the flock (sheep) of Christ, the saints of God, the church of the firstborn ones, the ones whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, the house of God, and the temple of God.

Choose one or more descriptions or images of the church and describe what that means to you.
