Read the Digging Deeper article, “How to deal with evil in our hearts,” from Lesson 7. Visit each of the Scriptures referenced and reflect on them. Why are humility and honesty essential to dealing with our own impure hearts? Explain in your own words, based on the article, how God has made a way for believers to have their sins removed and their hearts changed over time. See Romans 12:1-2 & Ephesians 4:17-32 for additional insights.

Humility and honesty are essential to dealing with our impure hearts because they are what allows us to confess our sins. The only way to be forgiven of your sins is to confess. When you lie about having sinned, you are doing two things. One, you are lying which is also a sin. Two, you are calling God a liar because he has said that we all sin. “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”— 1 John 1:10. Lying about whether or not you’ve sinned because of your arrogance just makes the sins worse. But with honesty and humility, we can own up to what we’ve done and ask and receive forgiveness for our sins. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.‭‭”— 1 John 1:9. God’s way for believers to have their sins removed is to first repent. Then, they must be baptized and commit themselves to God. When they are baptized, God takes away their sins. When they sin after being baptized, they must confess their sins to God and He will forgive them.

Humility and honesty are essential in dealing with and improving on our impure hearts because until we accept the fact that we are imperfect sinners, we will never be able to grow in Gods love and holiness. It is a stated fact that all of us have sinned, it is human nature, and if we pretend to be perfect we are comparing ourselves to God, who is the only true perfect one, and calling Him a liar considering it is written in Scripture that all men have sinned, 1 John 1:10. God has made it so that although we have sinned we can still fight against temptation, repent, and find our way back to Him. In Romans 12:2 we are told to “not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” meaning we are not to live for the world but for God. And in the same verse it says we do this “that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect”. Which says that God is the only perfect one and the only way for us to be good is to face all of our shortcomings and follow the will of God.

Humility and honesty are essential because, when we sin it is the only way they we can own up to what we did and be forgiven. If we were to ignore the fact that we are imperfect our hearts would stay impure and we wouldn’t be able to be forgiven and go to heaven with God. It’s the same reason Jesus came to die for us so that we may be forgive. In Ephesians 4:21-22 says “when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.” I think that this verse says that we need to let go of our old sinful ways and ask for forgiveness because that’s how we are to live for God.
