Many people begin the new year with resolutions, but few people stick to their resolutions for more than a month. Developing a consistent Bible study plan is a common resolution among Christians. Try these seven tips for kick staring your Bible study plan for 2021 and sticking with it all year long.
1. Make a Realistic Plan
Make a plan that works for your lifestyle and schedule. Choose a time and place that works well for you. If you are a night owl, don’t make a resolution to wake up early to study your Bible every day. If you only read your Bible a few times a year, don’t make a resolution to read through the entire Bible this year. Create a reading plan that is destined for success! Choose a book of the Bible that interests you and commit to reading at least a few verses each day. If you’re not sure where to start, we suggest the Gospel of Luke or the book of Philippians.
2. Be Consistent
Once you’ve created a plan, stick to your plan. Don’t give yourself a backup plan each day. “If I don’t get a chance to read at lunch then I’ll read before I go to bed.” This rarely ever works. Consistency is the main ingredient for developing a healthy and lasting lifestyle habit.
3. Avoid Distractions
Keep a notepad with you while you study. If something comes to mind that needs your attention, write it down. This will allow you to continue studying and know that you will remember to address that item once you are finished. Also choose a location that will minimize your distractions.
4. Write it Down
Take notes as you study. Writing things down helps to solidify what you’ve read in your memory. This practice also keeps you more focused on your study.
5. Give Yourself Grace
Do not be discouraged when things don’t work out like you’ve planned. Continue trying and don’t give up. God has given us so much grace that he sent Jesus to die for us. Certainly, we can give ourselves grace when it comes to our Bible study plan.
6. Start Fresh Each Month
Make the 1st of every month your reset button. It is never too late to begin developing stronger and more consistent study habits. You will never regret taking the time to regroup, adjust your plan and start again each month.
7. Pray
Begin your study each day with a prayer asking God to focus your mind and reveal something new to you as you are in his word. Use your study to not only learn from God’s word but also to grow your relationship with him through prayer. Complete your study time in prayer as well.
